How to Prepare for a Job Interview (Step-by-Step)

February 11, 2025

Great interviews aren't luck — they're preparation. Follow these steps and you'll show up ready to turn the conversation into a job offer.

1. Research the company and role

Read the job description closely and note the skills they emphasize. Study the company's website, recent news and social presence so you can speak to what they care about.

2. Match your experience to their needs

For each key requirement, prepare a specific example from your past that proves you can deliver. These stories are the backbone of strong answers.

3. Practice out loud

Rehearse the common questions — ideally with a friend or on camera. Practicing out loud, not just in your head, is what makes your delivery feel natural.

4. Prepare your own questions

Have three or four thoughtful questions ready about the team, expectations and success in the role. It shows genuine interest and helps you evaluate them, too.

5. Handle the logistics

Plan your outfit, route or video setup in advance. Bring extra copies of your resume, test your tech for remote interviews, and aim to arrive early.

6. Manage your nerves

Get a good night's sleep, breathe slowly before you begin, and remember: an interview is a two-way conversation, not an interrogation.

Preparation is what lets you perform instead of just answer. Next, review the most common interview questions and don't forget to follow up afterward.
