How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in an Interview

October 14, 2024

It's almost always the first question, and it sets the tone for the whole interview. Yet “tell me about yourself” trips up more candidates than any other question. Here's how to answer it with confidence.

What the interviewer really wants

They're not asking for your life story. They want a short, relevant summary of who you are professionally and why you're a fit for this role. Think of it as your 60-to-90-second highlight reel — not a recap of your resume line by line.

The present-past-future formula

The easiest way to structure your answer is in three parts:

A quick example

“I'm a customer-success manager with five years of experience helping SaaS clients cut churn. In my current role I lead a team of four and raised renewal rates by 18% last year. Before that I worked in support, which taught me how to turn frustrated customers into loyal ones. I'm drawn to this role because it combines that hands-on client work with the strategy side I want to grow into.”

Common mistakes to avoid

Don't ramble, don't start at childhood, and don't recite your resume. Keep it tight, keep it relevant, and practice out loud until it feels natural rather than memorized.
